Today we went to Topkapi Palace, the Palace of the great Ottoman empire. it was a truly spectacular place to visit! The palace is right next to the amazing Hagia Sophia and it is huge! The walls are covered in beautiful blue tiles and the ceilings and outsides are covered in gold. It was a beautiful palace to visit!
One of my more favorite parts of the day was when we visited the Harem, which is where the Sultan kept his wives. I really enjoyed seeing the Harem because it is so gorgeous and it was so apparent that they actually mattered to the Sultans. We learned in lecture that the women of the Harem had huge influences in the Ottoman Empire because a lot of the times the Sultan would confide in them especially the Sultans mother who lived there as well.
On the way back we stopped at a street vendor and got a hot drink called Salep, it tastes like thick hot white chocolate with cinnamon on top... it was great ... since then I have been getting it often!
